In collaboration with and funded by the John R Gentille Foundation, ELECTRI International, the American Society of Concrete Contractors, and The Association of Union Constructors, we have evaluated construction helmets using the STAR testing system. This system assesses each helmet’s ability to reduce linear and rotational head acceleration during a range of oblique fall scenarios representative of severe but survivable construction site accidents. Helmets earning more stars are associated with lower concussion and skull fracture risk in these scenarios. We recommend 4- and 5-star rated helmets for workers exposed to fall hazards.

These data highlight the superior impact protection of Type 2 helmets compared to traditional Type 1 hard hats. For more information on why upgrading to Type 2 helmets matters, see Hard Hats to Helmets.

New and not previously tested helmets will be added to the ratings on a continual basis.
